What is the yoga class like?

The main structure of each class will be the same. The first hour or so will be asana practice. Asana are the physical postures that are performed in yoga. Then there may be about ten minutes of pranayama practice. Pranayama is the use of breathing techniques. Then there will be a period of relaxation at the end of the class for at least ten minutes.

Do I have to be flexible?

No! It is a common misconception that you have to be flexible to do yoga. Everybody is different, we are all individuals so when we practice postures we will not all look the same. Yoga is not competitive and being able to stretch further than the person next to you won't mean you're getting more benefit. Everyone should work within their own limits and not push themselves. Yoga is very much about taking part and not just being able to reach your toes.

What should I wear?

It is best to wear something that is easy to move in like jogging trousers or leggings. On top a t-shirt is best, just make sure that it can be tucked in if it is loose so that it doesn't end up over your head when you bend forward!

What do I bring to the class?

If you need to borrow a mat, blanket or block then I will have spares at the class. If you have your own yoga mat then please bring it with you. A block or blanket to sit on can also be useful. Make sure you bring a warm jumper to wear or a blanket for the relaxation at the end of the class. The body can cool down quickly if you don't wrap up warm. If you wish to buy a mat I can supply you with one for £14. I can also supply you with a block for £4 and a fleece blanket for £4. If you would like a whole set then the price is £20. Many people do prefer their own mats for hygiene reasons and it's also nice to use for self practice at home.

Should I eat before of after a yoga class?

It is best to do yoga two to three hours after eating a meal if possible. Yoga on a full stomach can be uncomfortable and you will not get the best from the class so it is better to have digested your food before practising. I tend to eat a light dinner a few hours before an evening class and then have a snack after, that way I'm not starving and have no energy but I'm not so full I can't bend over my belly!

What benefits will I get from a yoga class?

From regular practice of yoga you can feel many benefits. Most common are increased flexibility, increased strength and a calmer mind.

If nothing else, my aim for each class is to send students home a little more relaxed and with a smile on their face after a pleasent evening of yoga practice.
